Public speaking: The key to extraordinary success in your career

Submitted by on January 15, 2014 – 3:45 pm |

UPDATE: The Future Voices site is now live! Click here to find out how we’re training up London’s future digital influencers.

This article is for those with the ambition and drive to build outstanding careers and fulfilling professional lives… if that ain’t you then here’s a link to a story about a puppy and a kitten that’s probably more up your street: www.viralnova.com/puppy-rescues-kitten/

The rise of event sites such as Meetup and Eventbrite, and community spaces such as Google Campus, has led to an explosion of digital and tech industry events in London. There have never been so many opportunities to network, meet potential clients or suppliers, build personal networks of peers and generally have fun getting to know those who share our passion for digital.

Finding interesting events and meeting people one-to-one is easy, but if you really want to supercharge your personal brand within the industry, then you need to think about starting to get up on stage.

The benefits of speaking (well!)

  • Become known in the industry as someone to watch in your area of expertise
  • Champion your company’s brand and bring in new business
  • Rapidly build up follower numbers for you and your company
  • Dramatically increase your industry visibility and add value to your personal brand
  • And you’ll get drinks bought for you by admirers following your stellar performance
centre of attention

The challenge is discovering what it is that you can talk about and having the confidence to deliver an engaging presentation.

Discovering your passion or area of expertise is a personal challenge and one that you need to think carefully about. A key question is: What do you want to be known for industry-wide?

When you’ve got your topic you need to learn the powerful techniques that will allow you to deliver crowd pleasing presentations with total confidence every time. Once these skills are mastered you’ll not only be comfortable on stage, presenting to any size of audience, you’ll be looking forward to it!

This is why we’ve created the Future Voices programme, an OMN initiative to help give London’s digital professionals the experience, confidence, tools, techniques and resources they need to shine. The course comprises of a 2-day workshop with a globally renowned speaker coach, followed by the opportunity to present to an audience at a dedicated Future Voices event which we’ll be running each month.

Miriam Staley - Public Speaking ExpertThe coach is none other than Miriam Staley, who as well as reaching the last 5 in the first season of The Apprentice (when it was good!) now trains and represents professional speakers, CEOs of multinational organisations and TV personalities. She’s coached Toastmasters champions, pro speakers and comedians like Shed Simove, whom some of you will remember from the last OMN event as well as senior directors from some of the UK’s largest companies.

The programme provides future brand champions with a ‘safe’ environment to learn with their peers, gain expert insight and practically develop their skills with Miriam… and most importantly grow their confidence and self-belief. This is what makes great speakers.

There is no doubt that some of your peers and colleagues will rise to the top of the game as they take every stage and speaking opportunity to build their reputations and profile. It’s up to you to decide whether you are going to be one of them. If so, the time to take action is now, and Future Voices might just be the first step on your road to extraordinary success.
